Rossendale is a great day out for the whole family; whether you are looking for adventure or relaxation, there is something for everyone.

For the more adventurous visitor you could try activities ranging from horse riding, dirt biking, snowboarding, rock climbing and much more!

If you are looking for something more relaxing you have a wonderful choice of beauty salons, swimming pools, browse the shops on Bank Street, or stop for a coffee in The Deli.

Looking for more culture? Rossendale has a number of really great museums and galleries.  The architecture in Rossendale ranges from 17th Century churches to modern structures such as the Haslingdon Halo.  The East Lancs Railway stops at Rawtenstall, if you’re in to steam trains and a nice pint of real ale then be sure to stop off at The Buffer Stop.

Attractions:

East Lancashire Railway

In 1844 the East Lancashire Railway ran a north-south route, leaving Manchester towards the Bolton line, Clifton Junction and Radcliffe before reaching Bury, 6 miles  north.   The line continued north along the Irwell Valley, through Summerseat and Ramsbottom before arriving in Rossendale; reaching Rawtenstall via Ewood Bridge.

It currently run 12 miles between Rawtenstall and Heywood, with station stops at Bury, Bolton Street, Summerseat,Ramsbottom and Irwell Vale.  Various events are held throughout the year please visit the ELR website click here

The Whitaker Museum and Art Gallery

The Whitaker is an amazing attraction; not only has this beautiful 19th Century building been lovingly restored, but now houses a modern art gallery with original exhibitions as well as being a museum.  The Whitaker has a wide variety of events through the year including live music, book signings, interesting talks, as well as haunted Halloween night!  click here to see what’s going on at The Whitaker.

Weavers Cottage

Weavers Cottage is an 18th Century loom shop which is now a museum where you can see a Victorian kitchen, a clog shop and a lovely tea room, and also houses working hand looms.  See more about Weavers Cottage in this video.

Lamberts Mill Shop and Museum

Lamberts Mill is a large houses a wonderful Shoe Museum, as well as offering modern furniture, carpets, fashion, gifts and much more! Annie Peaches Tea Room is also situated within Lamberts Mill offering a selection of hot and cold food.

Helmshore Mills Textile Museum

Visit historic mills and see original machinery at work. See how raw wool and cotton was turned into yarn, ready to be made into cloth. Take time to visit the Revolution gallery and follow Lancashire’s role in the industrial revolution.

Fitzpatricks Temperance Bar

Mr Fitzpatrick’s has been making cordial soft drinks for the people of Rossendale and the Lancashire regions since 1899. It is the only original Temperance Bar left in Britain.  With all it’s original fixtures and fittings, Fitzpatrick’s should definitely be on your list of things to see in Rossendale!
